EU: Imported pears becoming important

Time: 2013-07-22
The supply of pears on the German market is concentrating more and more in overseas import in the second half of February. This was reported by the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website. Besides the Italian Abate Fetel, only the Conference pear from the Benelux is sporadically available from the European assortment. However they both only play a small role in the German market traditionally.
In keeping with the small stock all over Europe, which are obtaining a reasonably high price level, the demand for Bon Chretien and Rosemarie pears from South Africa and Williams pears from Argentina is very good. Especially the pre-packed 1 kg package is desirable.
The pears that were on offer in the German food trade in week 8, were of many different varieties and origins. But here too the Williams and Bon Chretien pears from Argentina or South Africa were most represented. Of the 12 promotions, only four were for the Italian Abate Fetel. Their price offers  were between 1.79 Euro per kg for a tray and 2.99 Euro for loose wares. Overseas pears cost between 1.44 and 2.49 Euro per kg on promotion.
